All criminal cases are serious. A conviction for a crime even in City Court or Justice Court can have serious life-long consequences. This is especially true if you are not a United States citizen.

Convictions even in these misdemeanor courts could result in your deportation even if you are legally in the country. You should never plead guilty or accept a plea bargain unless you consult with an immigration lawyer if you are a non-citizen.

    A criminal conviction never “goes away” and cannot be expunged or removed from your record. Landlords, employers, banks and such can easily have access to your criminal history.

 
   Therefore, all criminal cases are serious. Obviously, even if you are a citizen, being charged with a felony is far more serious than being charged with a misdemeanor.
